Food Chain

We perceive life and receive life

Through our place on the food chain

And keep it however unkindly

Mosquitos annoy

Bears and lions threaten

But dogs we call friends

We swat flies

Kill the sharks and wolves

But take and tame the horses

We eat the buzzing honey homes of bees

Drink the silk-sweet milk of fatted cows

We feel an ease as man to lead our lambs to slaughter

Savor the taste of beast incased as tidy sausage

Through this insists

An eternal invitation

To sit and eat

With friends and strangers

Making amends and made grateful

For the blood gifts we're nourished with

Acknowledging the death that feeds us

And the infinite kinship that keeps us
